Easter Sunday is a day of celebration in the Maltese Islands. The somber mood of the previous days changes totally on Sunday. The ringing of church bells announces the Resurrection of Christ. A procession with the statue of the Risen Christ is held in a number of towns and villages across the islands in the morning. Some localities hold theirs in the evening. Traditionally, statue-bearers will run with the statue of Risen Christ back into the church at the end of the procession. The highlight of the day is a special family lunch that relatives and friends share together. The exchanging of easter eggs and the figolli remains very popular on this day. Figolli, a traditional almond-filled pastry, is often in the shape of a rabbit, lamb, fish or a heart and is normally covered in either icing sugar or melted chocolate.
