Rain and Wind Warnings / Twissijiet ta’ Xita u Riħ

ENGLISH/INGLIŻ

After the latest weather map updates, we have decided to issue two weather warnings. The main threats will be of heavy rainfall and very strong winds. A low pressure system over the central Mediterranean will intensify. The center of this system is likely to pass close-by, bringing some intense bad weather to the area around the Maltese Islands.

HEAVY RAIN WARNING

This warning is valid from noon on Wednesday 27th October till 03:00 on Friday 29th October, although showers will be possible at any time before then. The intense low pressure system will be almost stationary over the central Mediterranean. A wide band of rain will be associated with this system. Some isolated thunderstorms may be embedded within. This band of rain may produce lengthy periods of steady rainfall, possibly heavy at times. The rainfall will be widespread, and therefore, a wide area should receive a significant amount of precipitation. Total rainfall amounts will vary depending on how close the center of the system comes to the Maltese Islands, but some weather maps have suggested values as high as 100 mm (as a national average) over a period of 48 hours. No threat from large hail or dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning is being envisaged. Flooding is likely if low-lying areas are affected.

STRONG WIND WARNING

This warning is valid from 12:00 on Wednesday 27th October till 06:00 on Friday 29th October. As the storm system rotates over the central Mediterranean, wind direction is likely to shift slowly from the East Northeast to West Northwest. The details below describe how the situation should develop over this time period:

Wednesday 27th October

12:00 to 18:00 – Up to Force 6/7 from the East Northeast

18:00 to 00:00 – Up to Force 6/7 from the East Northeast

Thursday 28th October

00:00 to 06:00 – Up to Force 6/7 from the East Northeast

06:00 to 12:00 – Up to Force 6/7 from the East Northeast

12:00 to 18:00 – Up to Force 6/7 from the Northeast

18:00 to 00:00 – Up to Force 6/7 from the North Northeast

Friday 29th October

00:00 to 06:00 – Up to Force 6/7 from the Northwest

The sea will be rough to very rough, with wave heights of up to 3.5 metres in peak gusts. The swell will be a low to moderate East. Wave direction will also shift slowly, matching the gradual shift in wind direction. The main hazard will be from possible confused swell waves. As the wave direction shifts, swell waves from opposing direction will meet. These will lead to zones with confused and overlapping swells. A confused swell may be a hazard for swimmers and scuba divers. Crossing swells may also make boat handling more difficult.

We’ve had worse weather in the past. Simply remember to act responsibly at all times and avoid putting yourselves in situations that put yourself and others in unnecessary risk. MALTI/MALTESE

Wara l-aħħar aġġornament tal-mapep tat-temp, iddeċidejna li noħorġu żewġ twissijiet. Ir-riskju jidher li se jkun minn xita qawwija u riħ qawwi ħafna. Sistema ta’ pressjoni baxxa intensa fuq iċ-ċentru tal-Mediterran se tissaħħaħ. Iċ-ċentru ta’ din mistenni jgħaddi minn qrib tagħna, u b’hekk se ġġib maltemp intense lejn ir-reġjun ta’ madwar il-Gżejjer Maltin.

TWISSIJA TA’ XITA QAWWIJA

Updates

This week: Largely unstable

The weather across the central Mediterranean will be determined by the successive zones of instability that will traverse it over the course of the coming week. Most days will feature variably cloudy skies and the possibility of isolated showers. Some rain may obviously see more rain than others. We’re expecting the meteorological situation to be very dynamic, and therefore, saying when and where most rain will occur from so early on is impossible. What we’re sure of is the fact that showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop across the central Mediterranean on most days this week. After a very warm and humid weekend, temperatures are set to cool down. We’re expecting daytime highs of 21°C / 22°C on most days. Nighttime lows will be in the region of 16°C to 18°C. We expect the easterlies to dominate again. They will be strong at times too, particularly around midweek.

Updates

This week: A bit more stable

A ridge of high pressure will mean fine weather should prevail on most days this week. Localized zones of instability may produce the stray shower at some point, however, particularly on Tuesday and Friday brasil-libido.com. A cold front should also bring breezier conditions at the weekend. Temperatures will be slightly warmer, with daytime highs likely to be in the region of 21°C to 25°C. Nights will not be as cool either, with lows likely to be in the range of 16°C to 20°C. We’re looking at a light to moderate easterly on weekdays. The arrival of the cold front at the weekend will mark the swift return of the breezy northwesterly.

Updates

Stormy on Thursday / Maltemp għal Ħamis

ENGLISH/INGLIŻ

After studying the latest weather maps carefully, we can confirm stormy weather for Thursday. The main events will be heavy rain showers and an episode of strong wind. An intense low pressure system will move across the central Mediterranean on Thursday 14th October libido-de.com/. This will bring stormy weather very close to the Maltese Islands. How close we will get to the full intensity of this we cannot say.

POSSIBILITY OF HEAVY RAIN

Whilst showers will be possible at any time, we’re expecting much of the rain to fall in the morning and afternoon. It will be heavy at times, and may also be persistent at times. Some isolated thunderstorms will develop as well. The rainfall will be widespread, and should therefore affect all of the Maltese Islands. As things stand, we’re looking at potentially significant rainfall values. We advise you to not leave vehicles in low-lying areas known to be susceptible to flash flooding. With regards to the chance of hail, only small hailstones are possible (if at all).

POSSIBILITY OF STRONG WIND

The wind will be light to moderate from the West at first, but will turn North Northwest and rapidly increasing to near gale-force speeds at some point during the day. As things stand, this strong wind is likely to affect us between late morning and late afternoon. It will reach Force 7 at times, with stronger wind gusts being possible. The sea will become rough during this episode of strong wind. Wave direction will vary from Northwest to Northeast. We advise you to take boats out of the sea and try to avoid swimming and diving. It will be dangerous at sea, especially along the north coast.

As we’ve always done in the past, we will be providing you with continuous updates.

MALTI/MALTESE

Il-mapep qed jindikaw possibilita’ ta’ ammonti sinifikanti ta’ xita. Navżawkhom biex ma tħallux vetturi f’widien u nħawi magħrufa li jegħrqu meta tagħmel ix-xita qawwija. Fejn jidħol silġ, qed nagħtu biss possibilita’ ta’ silġ żgħir (jekk jagħmel).

POSSIBILITA’ TA’ RIĦ QAWWI

Ir-riħ se jkun ħafif għal moderat mill-Punent għal-ewwel, imma imbagħad se jdur Majjistral it-Tramuntana u jżid f’daqqa f’xi ħinijiet matul il-jum. Sa issa nistennew li dan ir-riħ qawwi jaħkimna f’xi ħin bejn tard filgħodu u tard wara nofsinhar. Se jilħaq Forza 7 kultant, b’buffuri aktar qawwija jkunu possibbli wkoll. Il-baħar jitqawwa matul dan l-episodju ta’ riħ qawwi. Id-direzzjoni tal-mewġ se tvarja bejn Majjistral u Grigal. Navżawkhom biex itellghħu d-dgħajjes u tevitaw li tmorru tgħumu jew tgħoddsu. Is-sitwazzjoni fuq il-baħar se tkun waħda prekarja, speċjalment tul il-kosta tat-tramuntana.

Kif dejjem għamilna fil-passat, aħna se nkunu qed naġġornawkhom kontinwament matul dan.

Stormy weather to welcome October / Ottubru se jibda bil-maltemp

ENGLISH/INGLIŻ

A short-wave upper-level low pressure system will move across the central Mediterranean in the coming days. This will bring relatively cold air over a very warm sea, creating a great deal of instability. There will be plenty of moisture in the atmosphere. This is expected to develop a series of showers and thunderstorms around and over the Maltese Islands. We’re expecting showers and thunderstorms from time to time between early morning on Friday 1st October and early morning on Sunday 3rd October. Rain is possible at any time during this time period.  Thunderstorms will be heavy and also possibly with hail at times. Strong wind gusts will also accompany some showers. The nights of Friday/Saturday and Saturday/Sunday are likely to bring the heaviest rain. We’re expecting this weekend’s rain to be more widespread, and most (if not all) localities are likely to have been affected by the end of it. Significant rainfall totals are possible. We will do our best to keep you informed regularly. We will issue warnings well in advance if the need arises.

MALTI/MALTESE

Firxa ta’ pressjoni baxxa se tgħaddi minn fuq iċ-ċentru tal-Mediterran fil-jiem li ġejjin. Din se twassal biex arja relattivament friska tiltaqa ma’ baħar sħun ħafna, u b’hekk tiżviluppa roqgħa nstabbli ferm. L-arja se tkun umda ħafna. Din se twassal għal iżvilupp ta’ serje ta’ ħalbiet tax-xita u maltempati bir-ragħad madwar u fuq il-Gżejjer Maltin. Qed nistennew ħalbiet tax-xita u maltempati bir-ragħad minn ħin għal-ieħor bejn kmieni filgħodu l-Ġimgħa 1 ta’ Ottubru u kmieni filgħodu l-Ħadd 3 ta’ Ottubru. Xita se tkun possibbli kwalunkwe ħin. Il-maltempati bir-ragħad se jkunu b’xita qawwija u possibilment anke bis-silġ kultant. Buffuri tar-riħ qawwija se jakkumpanjaw xi ħalbiet tax-xita. L-aktar xita qawwija għandha tkun madwarna matul l-iljieli tal-Ġimgħa/Sibt u s-Sibt/Ħadd. Nistennew li x-xita matul dawn il-jiem tkun ferm aktar mifruxa minn dik li kellna sa issa, bil-maġġoranza (jekk mhux kollha) tal-lokalitajiet ikunu affetwati sa tmiem il-perjodu nstabbli. Ammonti sinifikanti ta’ xita huma possibbli. Aħna se nagħmlu minn l-aħjar biex inżżommukhom aġġornati regolarment. Twissijiet jinħarġu minn ferm qabel jekk ikun hemm bżonn.

Updates

This week: Rain may return by the weekend

This week will be off to a fine start, with plentiful bright sunshine throughout the first half of it. No rain is expected on the first days back to school. The meteorological situation across the central Mediterranean could take a more unstable turn by the weekend, however. We’re expecting a zone of instability to develop across our area of the Mediterranean, possibly bringing some showers and thunderstorms to our showers. The likely days for this are Friday 1/10 and Saturday 2/10. This potential return of rain will be confirmed in separate updates at a later stage this week. We are expecting temperatures to vary more widely over the next seven days. Daytime highs will be in the range of 25°C to 30°C. Nighttime lows will vary from 19°C to 24°C. The cooler values would obviously occur if the rainy days materialize. The wind will shift to the northwesterly at the start of the week, and is likely to be rather strong on a number of days during the day. A shift back to easterly directions is possibly by the weekend.

Being the home of the British fleet in the central Mediterranean, the Axis powers tried repeatedly to either destroy or control the islands. This devastated Malta, but the island never gave in. Their stern resistance against the enemy in World War II was rewarded by the British, who both gave the people of Malta the George Cross and promised to give the Maltese people independence. A small amount of local rule was given in 1947, though it wasn’t until 21 September 1964 that full independence came. Malta became a republic a decade later and British forces finally left the country after the defence treaty expired on 31 March 1979, which is celebrated as Freedom Day.

Updates

This week: Windier and with airborne dust, but still largely dry

The atmosphere above the central Mediterranean will destabilize slightly over the course of the coming week. We’re expecting the weather to be cloudier, with a number of days likely to feature variably to mostly cloudy skies. The atmosphere will not be unstable enough for significant rain-bearing clouds to develop across the central Mediterranean. The only rain this week, if at all, will come in the form of brief sprinkles or light rain over the weekend. It will be a windier week too, with most days likely to be characterized by a moderate to strong East to Southeast wind. This is likely to blow fine dust from the Sahara Desert over our region, creating a distinct haze that will prevail on most days. Any sprinkles or light rain will deposit this fine desert sand. Temperatures will remain at warmer than average levels. Daytime highs will vary from 27°C to 31°C. Nighttime lows will be at the level of 23°C / 24°C.
