Christianity has been in the Maltese Islands for almost 2000 years. It was brought to the islands by the Apostle Paul in around 60 A.D. Paul was on his way to Rome to be tried, but the ship carrying him was caught in a violent storm and ended up being shipwrecked in Malta. All aboard swam safely to land. The site of the wreck is traditionally known as St.Paul’s Islands. 10th February is a public holiday in Malta. The feast is celebrated in Valletta

This week: Plentiful sunshine, but slightly colder

An anticyclone will strengthen over the central Mediterranean this week, ensuring fine weather on most days. With the exception of Monday 7/2, winds will be mainly light and from a predominantly westerly direction. The brightest and calmest day will be Thursday 10/2, the day of the Feast of St. Paul’s Shipwreck. Temperatures will be slightly colder this week, particularly at night. The lack of cloud cover, brought about by anticyclonic conditions allows the sun to shine brightly without interruption, allowing heat to accumulate during the day. This leads to warm daytime highs. The lack of cloud cover at night, however, allows the heat accumulated during the day to escape into space. The result is a colder nighttime low. Daytime maximum temperatures will be in the region of 14°C to 16°C. Nighttime minimum temperatures will vary from 7°C to 10°C. The only chance of rain this week will be late on Sunday 13/2, when a little light rain will be possible.

This week: A mixture of weather conditions

This week will bring a true mixture of weather conditions to the Maltese Islands. But how will the weather shape up over the next seven days? Most days this week will feature plentiful bright sunshine. Temperatures will also be warmer overall, especially when compared to last week. Daytime highs will be in the region of 14°C to 17°C over the course of this week. Nighttime lows will vary from 9°C to 12°C. This doesn’t mean there will not be episodes of less pleasant weather, however. Tuesday, the first day of February, is likely to bring a northwesterly wind of up to gale-force and the possibility of isolated showers. The wind will be rather strong throughout the first half of the week, but will decrease as we approach the weekend.

Updates

This week: Remaining cold

With the exception of a few isolated showers late on Monday 24/01, weekdays will be characterized by fine weather with plentiful bright sunshine. Instability may then bring showery weather for the weather, although this is yet to be confirmed. Temperatures will remain at or below the average for this time of year. Daytime highs will be in the region of 11°C to 15°C over the course of this week. Nighttime lows will vary from 4°C to 10°C. The first half of the week will be particularly cold. The wind will be mainly light to moderate from a predominantly westerly direction, but might strengthen over the weekend.

Updates

This week: Becoming colder by the weekend

The meteorological situation across the central Mediterranean will be relatively stable for much of this week. Anticyclonic conditions will mean mainly fine weather on all weekdays. The sky will be mainly sunny or partly cloudy. The wind will be light to moderate from a predominantly westerly direction. Temperatures will be fairly stable till the weekend, with daytime highs stable at 15°C. Nighttime lows will be in the range of 8°C to 10°C. The weekend could be a different story, however. A stream of cold air from northern Europe is forecast to reach the Mediterranean by the end of this week, possibly sparking a wintry episode. This will bring stronger winds from the North and colder temperatures. Daytime highs could fall to the 10°C to 12°C range, whereas nighttime lows could dip to as low as 5°C to 7°C. With the exception of isolated rain and/or hail showers on Saturday, this week is likely to be largely dry.

Rainy episode on the way / Se jkollna perjodu ta’ xita

ENGLISH/INGLIŻ

A stream of cold, dry air from over the Balkans and a flow of cool, moist air from over the western Mediterranean will converge over the central Mediterranean. The cool, moist air will rise above the colder air. This will develop a band of rain-bearing clouds. We’re expecting episodes of steady rain over the Maltese Islands between mid-afternoon on Wednesday 12th January and early morning on Thursday 13th January. The rain will be moderate to heavy at times. We’re expecting substantial nation-wide rainfall totals. This rain may lead to flooding across the usual areas. We are NOT expecting any thunderstorms. The heaviest rain is likely overnight. The wind will be mainly calm during the rain. As soon as the rain-bearing system starts moving away, the wind is expected to veer East to East Northeast and increase rapidly to become Force 5 to 6. This wind will persist into Friday 14th January. The weekend should bring spring-like weather to the Maltese Islands.

This week: Rain could return by the weekend

An anticyclone covering areas of north Africa and the western Mediterranean will continue to persist till at least the start of the weekend. We expect weekdays to feature mainly sunny or partly cloudy skies. An area of low pressure is likely to develop across the western and central Mediterranean by the weekend, marking the potential return of rain to the Maltese Islands. This would be the first widespread showers in almost a month. More information about this will be given as the week goes on. The anticyclone will weaken gradually as the week progresses, allowing stronger winds to develop. In fact, most days this week will be characterized by a strong breeze. The westerlies will be the predominant wind direction. Temperatures will remain very warm well into this week, before cooling down over the weekend. Daytime highs will range from 19°C to 14°C. Nighttime lows will dip from 13°C to 9°C.
