GALE-FORCE WIND WARNING / TWISSIJA TA’ RIEFNU

ENGLISH/INGLIŻ

An intense low pressure system over the Adriatic Sea will draw in air from an area of high pressure over Spain and southern France. This will generate a very strong wind from the West Southwest to West Northwest across the central Mediterranean. This very strong wind may reach gale-force at times. This warning is valid from 00:00 on Monday 29th November till 09:00 on Tuesday 30th  November, and will be updated when or if necessary. The information below describes how the situation is expected to develop over this time period:

Monday 29th November

00:00 to 03:00 – West to West Southwest Force 5 (up to Force 6)

03:00 to 06:00 – West Southwest Force 6 (up to Force 7)

06:00 to 09:00 – West Southwest Force 6 (up to Force 7)

09:00 to 12:00 – West Southwest Force 7 (up to Force 8)

12:00 to 15:00 – West Southwest Force 7 (up to Force 8)

15:00 to 18:00 – West Southwest to West Force 7 (up to Force 8)

18:00 to 21:00 – West Force 8 (up to Force 10)

21:00 to 00:00 – West to West Northwest Force 7 (up to Force 8)

Tuesday 30th November

00:00 to 03:00 – West Northwest Force 7 (up to Force 8)

03:00 to 06:00 – West Northwest Force 6 (up to Force 7)

06:00 to 09:00 – West Northwest to Northwest Force 5 (up to Force 6)

The Northwest wind will decrease gradually to become Force 2 to 3 by the evening on Tuesday 30th  November.

The peak gusts will blow across the Maltese Islands in the evening of Monday 29th November, when they could reach Force 10 at times across exposed areas of the Maltese Islands. The sea will be rough to very rough, with significant wave heights of up to 5 metres in peak gusts. The swell will be from the Northwest. The map indicates the stretch of coastline most exposed to this very strong wind and very rough sea.

Brief showers, possibly heavy and with small hail, may accompany the stronger wind gusts. The strong wind will also cause temperatures to feel much colder than they actually are.

More persistent rain, heavy at times, on Sunday / Aktar xita persistenti, kultant qawwija, għal-Ħadd

ENGLISH/INGLIŻ

Sunday 28th November is set to be another washout. A slow-moving cold front will move across the central Mediterranean. A wide rain band will be associated with this front. This will bring episodes of persistent rain. The rain will be heavy at times. The risk of thunderstorms is very small. Some small hail may accompany the rain at times, however. Once again, we’re expecting rainfall totals to be significant. A national average in the region of 30 mm (possibly higher) is likely. The fields are waterlogged and waterways are still full up. One shower is enough to create flooding at this point. Since the upcoming rain is likely to be persistent, more flooding will almost certainly occur. Once again, we urge you to NOT leave vehicles in low-lying areas prone to flooding. We also advise you to AVOID driving through low-lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall on Sunday 28th November is likely to be widespread, affecting the whole of the Maltese Islands. The bulk of the rain will come between 06:00 and 18:00, with the persistent rain giving way to showery outbreaks in the evening. The wind will be strong on Sunday 28th November, blowing at Force 6 to 7 from the West to West Southwest.

MALTI / MALTESE

Il-medja nazzjonali taf tlaħħaq il-medja ta’ 30 mm (jew aktar). L-għelieqi mifqugħa bl-ilma u l-widien għadhom mimlija. Qiegħdin f’punt, li mqar ħalba xita waħda tkun biżżejjed biex toħloq għargħar. Peress li din ix-xita li qed inbassru taf tkun persistent, aktar għargħar għandu jkun mistenni. Għal darb’oħra navżawkom biex MA TĦALLUX il-vetturi tagħkhom f’inħawi magħrufha għal ilma li jinġabar fihom. Nagħtukhom parir ukoll biex TEVITAW li ssuqu minn ġo toroq magħrufha għal ilma li jinġabar fihom. Ix-xita tal-Ħadd 28 ta’ Novembru se tkun mifruxa, u għalhekk se taffetwa lill-Gżejjer Maltin kollha. Il-maġġoranza tax-xita mistennija bejn 06:00 u 18:00, bit-temp isir b’ħalbiet tax-xita matul filgħaxija. Ir-riħ se jkun qawwi mill-Punent għal Punent Lbiċ matul il-jum tal-Ħadd 28 ta’ Novembru. Dan se jlaħħaq sa Forza għal 7.

What do we expect on Thursday 25/11? / X’għandna nistennew il-Ħamis 25/11?

ENGLISH/INGLIŻ

Apologies for keeping you waiting till the evening for an update about the unstable weather we’re expecting on Thursday 25th November. We’ve heard so much about it. Some even went as far as predicting the apocalypse. Our interpretation of weather charts, which is always based on science, indicates that the bad weather we’re expecting across the Maltese Islands should be seasonal and NOT extraordinarily severe. An area of low pressure will develop around the central Mediterranean, bringing warm, humid air from the south over cool, dry air locally. The atmosphere above our region will be destabilized, leading to the development of an area of showers and thunderstorms. The most intense stormy weather will be centered over the Ionian Sea, far away from the Maltese Islands. Locally, we’re expecting rain, which may be continuous at times. This will be heavy and thundery at times. Wind speed may increase ahead of thundery showers. Some hail is possible, but this should be small in size. DESPITE THIS, as we’ve ALWAYS said, we advise you to follow basic precautions, such as not leaving vehicles parked in areas prone to flooding. Rain is possible at all times on Thursday 25/11. The weather will clear up by dawn on Friday 26/11.

MALTI / MALTESE

Niskużaw ruħna li ħalljenikom tistennew sa filgħaxija għal aġġornament rigward it-temp instabbli li qed nistennew għal matul il-jum tal-Ħamis 25 ta’ Novembru. Smajna ħafna dwaru dan. Hemm min saħansitra bassar l-aħħar tad-dinja. L-interpretazzjoni tagħna tal-mapep tat-temp, li hija dejjem ibbażata fuq ix-xjenza, ma tindikax dan kollu. Qed nistennew li l-Gżejjer Maltin jesperjenzaw maltemp staġġjonali, u mingħajr severita’ straordinarja. Żona nstabbli se tiżviluppa madwar iċ-ċentru tal-Mediterran. Din se tlaqqa arja sħuna u umda minn fuq l-Afrika ta’ fuq ma’ l-arja friska u niexfa li hawn madwarna  L-atmosfera ta’ madwarna se tiddistabiliżża ruħha, u b’hekk twassal biex tiżviluppa żona b’ħalbiet tax-xita u maltempati bir-ragħad. Il-maltemp l-aktar sever mistenni li jkun iffukat fuq il-Baħar Jonju, lil hinn mill-Gżejjer Maltin. Lokalment qed nistennew xita, li tista tkun kontinwa kultant. Din se tkun qawwija u bir-ragħad kultant. Ir-riħ kapaċi jitqawwa qabel xi ħalbiet tax-xita bir-ragħad. Teżisti l-possibilita’ ta’ xi silġ ukoll, għalkemm dan mistenni li jkun żgħir fid-daqs. MADANKOLLU, kif DEJJEM għidna, wieħed għandu jsegwi prekawzjonijiet bażiċi, bħal li ma tħallux vetturi f’inħawi magħrufa għal ilma li jgħaddi minnhom. Ix-xita se tkun possibbli matul il-jum kollu tal-Ħamis 25/11. It-temp se jiċċara minn sbieħ il-jum tal-Ġimgħa 26/11.

Expect stormy weather / Ġej il-maltemp

ENGLISH/INGLIŻ

A cold front associated with an intense low pressure system over northern Algeria will affect the central Mediterranean from mid-afternoon on Wednesday 10th November and mid-afternoon on Thursday 11th November. This will bring periods of continuous rainfall, some heavy and thundery at times, to the Maltese Islands. MALTI / MALTESE

This week: Turning wet again

The past week brought warmer and drier weather to the Maltese Islands. We’re expecting the meteorological situation to change slightly over the coming week spójrz tutaj. An episode of moderate to strong winds is likely around midweek and towards the weekend.

Updates

Warm, dusty days ahead / Ġejjin jiem sħan u mdaħħnin

ENGLISH/INGLIŻ

An intense low pressure system will develop over the western Mediterranean. Simultaneously, a ridge of high pressure will be present over the eastern Mediterranean. The Maltese Islands will be sandwiched in between. This meteorological situation will be perfect for the development of a gusty southerly wind across our region. This southerly wind, which will gust up to Force 7 at times, will affect us in several ways from Wednesday 3rd November through to Sunday 7th November. Daytime highs will spike, potentially reaching 25°C + on all five days. Nights will be very warm too. We’re expecting this wind to blow some fine desert sand across our region too, causing skies to become hazy at times. Grey skies are likely too. This dull weather is more likely over the weekend. Although widespread rainfall is not on the forecast, a little light rain is possible this weekend. Any rain will obviously deposit fine desert sand.

MALTI / MALTESE

Sistema ta’ pressjoni baxxa intensa se tiżviluppa fuq il-punent tal-Mediterran fil-jiem li ġejjin. Fl-istess waqt, firxa ta’ pressjoni għolja se tkun preżenti fuq il-lvant tal-Mediterran. Il-Gżejjer Maltin se jkunu maqbudin bejn dawn it-tnejn. Din is-sitwazzjoni meterjoloġika se tkun perfetta biex jinħoloq riħ b’buffuri qawwijin minn nofsinhar madwar ir-reġjun tagħna. Dan ir-riħ isfel, li se jilħaq buffuri ta’ Forza 7 kultant, se jaffetwana b’diversi modi mill-Erbgħa 3 ta’ Novembru sal-Ħadd 7 ta’ Novembru. L-ogħla temperaturi mal-jum se jergħu jogħlew, u għandhom jilħqu 25°C + matul il-jiem kollha. It-temperatura billejl se tkun sħuna wkoll. Nistennew li dan ir-riħ iġib miegħu xi trab fin fl-arja lej ir-reġjun tagħna wkoll, u se jwassal biex is-sema jkun imdaħħan sew. Is-sema jkun mgħotti bi sħab griż ukoll. Dan it-temp griż mistenni l-aktar lejn tmiem il-ġimgħa. Għalkemm xita mifruxa sinifikanti mhux imbassra, jaf ikollna xi ftit qtar ta’ xita iżolata. F’dan il-każ ix-xita tkun tal-ħamrija.

Updates

This week: Much warmer and drier

The coming week across the central Mediterranean will be characterized by much warmer temperatures and noticeably drier weather. This is due to the advection of a warm air mass from north Africa across our region under predominantly southeasterly winds. Temperatures will vary widely. We’re looking at daytime highs of 23°C to 28°C. Nighttime lows will also vary widely, between 16°C and 22°C. Most days will be characterized by variably cloudy skies, with lengthy episodes of grey skies. A moderate westerly at the start of the week should give way to a stronger easterly by midweek. This will blow some dust towards us spójrz tutaj. Apart from the showery weather in the very early hours of Monday, no significant widespread rainfall is likely, apart from the odd shower that would deposit fine desert sand.

Summer time ends / Jispiċċa l-ħin tas-sajf

ENGLISH/INGLIŻ

We set clocks back an hour tonight. The German Empire and its World War I ally Austria-Hungary were the first to use Daylight Saving Time (DST) as a means of conserving coal during wartime. Others followed suit. Most countries abandoned it in the years following World War II. Since then, the world has seen many enactments, adjustments, and repeals. Much of Africa, Asia, South America and Oceania do not follow it anymore. Back in 2019 the European Parliament approved a proposal to scrap the system across the European Union. Due to delays caused by the pandemic, the process is still in the legislative stages, with a decision expected later in the year. There are several arguments, both in favor and against. If we stick to summer time, it will be darker in the mornings in winter, but there will be much more light in the evening. If we stick to winter time, there will be more light in the mornings in winter, but it will get dark earlier in the summer. Do you think Daylight Saving Time is still relevant nowadays?

This year, Daylight Saving Time ends in the night between Saturday 30/10 and Sunday 31/10, so do not forget to move your clock back one hour before going to bed on Saturday. On Sunday, the sun rises at 06:23 and sets at 17:07, as winter slowly sets in.

MALTI / MALTESE

Fl-2019, il-Parlament Ewropwe approva proposta li s-sistema ta’ bdil fil-ħin tieqaf madwar l-Unjoni Ewropea kollha. Minħabba dewmien ikkawżat mill-pandemija ta’ bħalissa, il-proċess għadu fl-istadju leġislattiv, b’deċiżjoni mistennija aktar tard din is-sena. Hemm diversi argumenti favur u kontra. Jekk inżommu l-ħin tas-sajf, se jkollna aktar dlam filgħodu fix-xitwa, imma aktar dawl filgħaxija. Jekk inżommu l-ħin tax-xitwa, se jkun hemm aktar dawl filgħodu fix-xitwa, imma se jidlam aktar kmieni fis-sajf. Int taħseb li l-bidla fil-ħin għadha relevanti llum il-ġurnata?

Il-ħin tas-sajf jasal fi tmiemu matul il-lejl ta’ bejn is-Sibt 30/10 u l-Ħadd 31/10. Għalhekk tinsewx tressqu l-ħin b’siegħa lura qabel torqdu. Nhar il-Ħadd, ix-xemx titla fis-06:23 u tinżel fil-17:07, hekk kif ix-xitwa tkompli toqrob.
